    Gerd Kanter (born May 6, 1979) is an Estonian discus thrower. He competed at the 2004 Olympics, but didn't reach the final. 2005 was his breakthrough year as he won silver medals at the World Championships and World Athletics Final, took home a victory in the European Cup and won the World University Games. He also threw more than 70 metres for the first time.

    Jarred Rome (born 21 December 1976) is an American discus thrower. His personal best throw is 67.51 metres, achieved in July 2004 in Chula Vista.

  4. Rutger Smith

    Rutger Smith (born July 9, 1981 in Groningen) is a Dutch athlete competing in shot put and occasionally discus throw. At the 2000 World Junior Championships he won medals in both events, and he competed in both events at the 2004 Olympics. In 2005 he won silver medals in shot put at the European Indoor Championships and World Championships.

    Ehsan Hadadi (born 20 January 1985 in Tehran) is an Iranian discus thrower. The 2004 Asian Junior Champion, he won a gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Championships in Grosseto, becoming the first male Iranian to win a medal at any global athletics competition.   6. Aleksander Tammert

    Aleksander Tammert is an Estonian discus thrower. He competed at the 2004 Olympics and originally finished fourth, but as gold medal winner Róbert Fazekas was disqualified Tammert got the bronze medal. A month later he placed third at the World Athletics Final. 2005 was not his lucky year, placing fourth at both the World Championships and the World Athletics Final. Countryfellow Gerd Kanter won silver medals at both these events.

  8. Frantz Kruger

    Frantz Kruger (born May 22, 1975 in Kempton Park, South Africa) is a discus thrower who won the Olympic bronze medal in 2000. He is also a double African champion. His personal best throw of 70.32 metres, achieved in May 2002 in Salon-de-Provence, is the current African record. He is married to Finnish former triple jumper Heli Koivula-Kruger, and received Finnish passport in 2007.

  10. Al Oerter

    Alfred Adolf "Al" Oerter, Jr. (born September 19, 1936) is a former American athlete, four times Olympic Champion in the discus throw. In 2005, he was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. Born in Astoria, New York, Al Oerter grew up in New Hyde Park and attended Sewanhaka High School. He began his career at the age of 15 when a discus landed at his feet and he threw it back past the crowd of throwers.

  11. Michael Möllenbeck

    Michael Möllenbeck is a German discus thrower. His greatest achievements are two World Championship bronze medals, and his bronze at the 2005 World Championships was especially welcome as Germany struggled to win medals. His personal best throw is 67.64 metres, achieved in June 2002 in Dortmund. This ranks him seventh among German discus throwers, behind Jürgen Schult, Lars Riedel, Wolfgang Schmidt, Armin Lemme, Hein-Direck Neu and Alwin Wagner.

    Lars Riedel (born June 28, 1967 in Zwickau) is a successful German discus thrower. He ranks sixth in all-time longest discus throw distances with a personal best of 71.50m. Riedel began his discus career in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). He grew up in Thurn which is next to Zwickau. In 1983 he went to join SC Karl-Marx-Stadt.

    Meg Ritchie (born 6 July 1952 in Kirkcaldy) is a retired Scottish discus thrower. Her personal best throw was 67.48 metres, achieved in April 1981 in Walnut. This is the current British record. In the shot put her personal best was 18.99 metres, achieved in May 1983 in Tucson. This is the Scottish record, and places her third on the British outdoor list, behind Judy Oakes and Myrtle Augee.

  17. Gabriele Reinsch

    Gabriele Reinsch is a German track and field athlete. She represented East Germany in the Olympic games in the discus throw. On July 9, 1988 at the East Germany - Italy tournament in Neubrandenburg she set a new world record with a throw of 76.80 meters. This was 2.24 meters further then the previous record, set by the Czechoslovakian Zdenka Šilhavá.

    Jürgen Schult is a German track and field athlete, who represented East Germany in the 1988 Olympic competition in the discus throw on October 1, 1988, where he won the gold medal. Later in his long sport career he joined the reunified German team. He competed in a second Olympic Games in 1992, getting a silver medal, and the 1999 World Championships, again getting second place.

Born in Vienna, Georgia, an athlete of note Roger excelled at the high jump and discus in his formative years as well as being a noteworthy American football player.     John Gates Powell (born June 25, 1947 in San Francisco) is a former American athlete. John Powell set the 1975 world record in the discus throw, his personal best, set later, is 71.26 m in 1984. Powell currently runs several yearly throwing camps with fellow Olympian throwers.

    Ilke Wyludda (born March 28, 1969 in Leipzig) is a former discus thrower from Germany. She set eleven junior records at discus throw and even two at shot put, and became junior world champion. Between 1989 and 1991 she recorded 41 successive wins, only to be beaten by Tzvetanka Khristova at the 1991 World Championships. Wyludda never won the world championships, but she became Olympic champion in 1996.

  31. Anthony Washington

    Anthony Washington (born January 16, 1966 in Glasgow, Montana) is a former American discus thrower, who competed in two consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country. At the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Washington won the gold medal in discus throw. His personal bests are 71.14 m in discus and 59.58 m in hammer throw. He once appeared in a Snickers candy bar commercial.

  32. Ivan Ukhov

    Ivan Ukhov (born 4 April 1986 in Chelyabinsk) is a Russian high jumper. His personal best jump is 2.33 metres, achieved in June 2006 in Langen. His 2.39 jump indoors at Moscow on 28 January, 2007, ranks him tied for sixth place amongst the top indoor high jumpers all-time. He is a former discus thrower, but took up high jumping in 2004 and improved from 2.10 to 2.30 in 2005.

He is the current African record holder in shot put with 21.97 metres, and also a former junior world record holder. He also holds the African indoor record with 21.47 metres, achieved in December 2001 in Norman.

  34. Martin Sheridan

    Martin J. Sheridan (born March 28, 1881 in Treenduff, County Mayo, Ireland - died March 27, 1918) is a former athlete from the United States, who moved as a sixteen year old to the U.S.A four time Olympic gold medalist, he won the discus throw event at the 1904, 1906, and 1908 Summer Olympics as well as the shot put at the 1906 Olympics. Sheridan also competed at the 1906 Summer Olympics and was the flag-bearer for the American team in the 1908 Summer Olympics.

  35. Astrid Kumbernuss

    Astrid Kumbernuss is a former German female shot putter and discus thrower. Her career started at the SC Neubrandenburg sports club. Her greatest successes were gold medals at the 1995, 1997 and 1999 World Championships in Athletics, and the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. In 1997, she was awarded "Athlete of the Year". In 1998, she gave birth to her son Philip, and retired from her sports career in 2005.

  36. Romas Ubartas

    Romas Ubartas is a former discus thrower from Lithuania who won a silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics for the USSR and a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics for Lithuania. His personal best was 70.06m. He also became European champion, in 1986. In the Soviet time he trained at Dynamo in Vilnius.

  39. Robert Garrett

    Robert S. Garrett (May 24, 1875 - April 25, 1961) was an American athlete. He was the first modern Olympic champion in discus throw and shot put. Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, Garrett came from a wealthy family and studied in Princeton University. He excelled in track and field athletics as an undergraduate, and was captain of the Princeton track team in both his junior and senior years.

  40. Anastasia Kelesidou

    Anastasia Kelesidou (born November 28, 1972 in Hamburg, Germany) is a retired Greek discus thrower best known for winning silver medals at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. During her career she set seven Greek records in discus throw, the best being 67.70 metres. Her only international victory came at the 1997 Mediterranean Games.
