    James A. Bell is corporate president, chief financial officer and an executive vice president of The Boeing Company, the world's largest aerospace company. He was named as acting CFO in November 2003 and formally elected to the position by the Boeing board of directors in January 2004. From March through June 2005, in addition to his CFO duties Bell served as Boeing president and chief executive officer on an interim basis. He was appointed corporate president in June 2008.

  4. Alden B. Dow

    Alden B. Dow (b. April 10 1904, Midland, Michigan - d. August 20 1983) was an American architect; he was the son of Herbert Henry Dow (founder of the Dow Chemical Company) and Grace A. Dow. Dow is known for his prolific architectural design. His personal house in Midland, the Midland Center for the Arts, as well as the current building for the Grace A. Dow Library (named in honor for his mother) are examples of his work based in his hometown.

  5. Herbert Henry Dow

    Herbert Henry Dow was a U.S. (Canadian-born) chemical industrialist. He attended the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, where he became a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. His most significant achievement was as founder and eponym of Dow Chemical Company in 1897 with the assistance of Charles Nold. Two years later, he also started the Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan as a personal hobby.

    Geoffery E. Merszei is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Dow Chemical Company. He is also a member of Dow's Board of Directors, its Executive Committee, and Environment Health & Safety Committee. He has executive oversight for Dow's activities in Europe. He is a member of Dow's Executive Leadership Committee, which is responsible for corporate strategy and financial performance.

    Professor Jacqueline K. Barton is the Arthur and Marian Hanisch Memorial professor of Chemistry at California Institute of Technology. The primary focus of her research is transverse electron transport along double-stranded DNA, its implications in the biology of DNA damage and repair, and its potential for materials sciences applications. She is married to fellow Caltech chemist Peter Dervan.

  9. George C. Pimentel

    George C. Pimentel (1922-1989) was the inventor of the chemical laser. He started teaching at UC Berkeley in 1949 until he died in 1989. The main chemistry lecture hall at Berkeley, 1 Pimentel Hall, was named in honor of him. Pimentel Hall is unique in that it features a rotating stage which allows for one professor to teach class, one to set up, and one to clean up, thus allowing the room to be used continuously despite the long setup times involved in chemistry lectures.

    Ursula M. Cowgill is a biologist and anthropologist who worked for Yale University, Dow Chemical Company and the University of Colorado during the second half of the 20th century. Her work includes studies of agricultural practices in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, seasons of birth in human beings, the relationship between cultural gender bias and infant mortality, and the possible role of selenium in reducing mortality from AIDS.
