  1. Li Hongzhang

    Li Hongzhang (February 15, 1823 - November 7, 1901) was a Chinese general who ended several major rebellions, and a leading statesman of the late Qing Empire. He served in important positions of the Imperial Court, once holding the office of the Viceroy of Zhili. He was best known in the west for his diplomatic negotiation skills. Since 1894 First Sino-Japanese War, Li had become a literary symbol for China's embarrassments in the late Qing Dynasty.

    Wu Bangguo (born July 1941) is a politician in the People's Republic of China. He is currently chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, a position generally recognized as the third-highest in the power structure of the PRC, and second in official rankings in the party. Wu was born in Feidong County, Anhui province.

  3. Chen Duxiu

    Chen Duxiu played many different roles in Chinese history. Along with Li Dazhao, Chen was a co-founder of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. He was its first Chairman, first General Secretary and an educator, philosopher, and politician. His ancestral home was in Anqing (安慶), Anhui, where he established the influential vernacular Chinese newspaper "New Youth".

  5. Wang Ming

    Wang Ming was a senior leader of the early Communist Party of China (CPC) as well as the mastermind of the famous 28 Bolsheviks group. Wang was also a major political rival of Mao Zedong during the 1930s, opposing Mao's nationalist deviation from the Comintern and orthodox Marxism and Leninism line. Wang epitomized the intellectualism and foreign dogmatism Mao criticized in his essays "On Practice" and "On Contradiction".

Duan gained the post of Heilongjiang governor in the late Qing dynasty and between 1912-13 he was governor of Chahar, and the military governor of Hubei between 1914-15, as well as Military and Civil governor of Fengtian in 1915-16.   7. Zhang Jingyao

    Zhang Jingyao, Chang Ching-yao, 張敬堯, (1881 - 1933), was a Chinese General, the military governor of Chahar and later Hunan Province. He was known as one of the most notorious of China's war-lords, known for his troops' atrocities and the looting of Hunan of its wealth during his administration.

  8. Ding Ruchang

    Ding Ruchang (18 November 1836 - 12 February 1895) was the commander of the Qing Empire's Beiyang Fleet during the Battle of the Yalu River in the First Sino-Japanese War. He became a casualty of the battle from the opening shot of his own vessel, the "Dingyuan", along with a number of officers also present on the bridge.

  9. Ni Sichong

    Ni Sichong was one of the handful of Beiyang generals who along with Zhang Xun supported Yuan Shikai's Empire of China during the National Protection War. He was later part of the Anhui clique until resigning in 1920 due to the disastrous defeat in the Zhili-Anhui War.

  10. Li Jingfang

    Li Jingfang, also known as Li Ching-fong, was a Chinese statesman during the Qing dynasty. Being the nephew and adopted son of the late statesman Li Hongzhang, he served in his adoptive father's secretariat in his youth. In 1882, Li Jingfang obtained the second highest degree in the imperial examinations and subsequently obtained appointment in the Qing foreign service because of his knowledge of English.

    Dai Zhen was a notable scholar of the Qing Dynasty from Xiuning in Anhui province. A versatile scholar, he made great contributions to mathematics, geography, phonology and philosophy. His philosophical and philological critiques of Neo-Confucianism continue to be influential. Dai Zhen's philosophical contributions included contributions to the Han Learning school of Evidential Learning which criticized the Song Learning school of Neo-Confucianism.

    Liu Mingchuan was a Chinese official during the Qing dynasty, born in Hefei in Anhui province. He became involved in the suppression of the Taiping rebellion at and early age, and worked closely with both Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang. In 1885, he was appointed the first governor of the newly-established province of Taiwan.     Zhang Tingyu was a Han Chinese politician during the Qing Dynasty. Zhang Tingyu was born in Tongcheng in Anhui province.
