Walter Marty Schirra, Jr. (March 12, 1923 - May 3, 2007) was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts chosen for the Project Mercury, America's first effort to put men in space. James Black (1800-1872) was the creator of the original Bowie knife designed by Jim Bowie. James Black was born in Hackensack, New Jersey on 1 May 1800. James' mother died when he was very young and he had difficulty getting along with his step-mother. He graduated from the City College of New York and received a Ph.D. in 1892 from Johns Hopkins University.
