  1. Brian Nichols

    Brian Gene Nichols (born December 10, 1971 in Baltimore, Maryland) is accused of shooting and killing Judge Rowland W. Barnes, court reporter Julie Brandau, and deputy sheriff Sgt. Hoyt Teasley at a Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, Georgia on March 11, 2005, and is the suspect in the murder of U.S. Customs agent, David Wilhelm, on March 12, 2005.

    Rowland W. Barnes was a Fulton County, Georgia, Superior Court Judge who oversaw the 2003 trial of hockey star Dany Heatley, who killed his teammate Dan Snyder in a car accident.

In 1998, Senator Fort chaired the Senate Study Committee on Public Education Disciplinary Reform.

  5. David Shafer

    David J. Shafer is a Georgia politician. He currently serves in the State Senate, representing portions of Fulton County and Gwinnett County in the suburbs north of Atlanta. Shafer is a Republican. He served as executive director of the Georgia Republican Party in the early 1990s, managed the gubernatorial campaign of Republican businessman Guy Millner in 1994 and was himself the Republican nominee for Secretary of State in 1996.

  6. Hamilton E. Holmes

    Dr. Hamilton E. Holmes was a physician (orthopedist) who helped desegregate the University of Georgia as one of the first two African-American students (along with Charlayne Hunter-Gault) in 1961, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was also the first African-American student to attend the Emory University School of Medicine, receiving his M.D. in 1967, later becoming a professor of orthopedics and associate dean.

  7. Dickson Mounds

    The Dickson Mounds National Historic Site, a Native American settlement site and burial mound complex near Lewistown, Illinois, is located in Fulton County on a low bluff overlooking the Illinois River. A museum erected on the site in the 1970s by the U.S. state of Illinois describes the life cycles and culture of Native Americans living in the Illinois River valley over a period of 12,000 years since the last Ice Age. The museum is part of the Illinois State Museum system.

  8. Sidney Marcus

    Sidney J. Marcus was a Georgia (U.S.) legislator from Atlanta's 26th district, now the 106th district, who served in the Georgia General Assembly from 1968 until his death in 1983. He served on several committees: Health and Ecology, on which he was chairman; Ways and Means; and Rules. For several years, Marcus was chairman of Fulton County delegation. He was also an unsuccessful candidate for Mayor of Atlanta in 1981, defeated by Andrew Young.

  9. Paul Coverdell

    Paul Douglas Coverdell was a United States Senator from Georgia and was also the director of the Peace Corps from 1989 until 1991. He was elected for the first time in 1992 and re-elected in 1998. He died while still in the Senate of a cerebral hemorrhage. Coverdell, a Republican, was often described as a quiet, soft-spoken man, but he left profound marks on the governments of both the state of Georgia and the nation in a relatively brief period of time.

  10. Charles Weltner

    Charles Weltner (December 17, 1927 - August 31, 1992) was a politician from the U.S. state of Georgia. Weltner was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He received a bachelor's degree from Oglethorpe University in 1948. Then, in 1950, he received a law degree from Columbia Law School. After serving 2 years in the United States Army, Weltner practiced law in Atlanta and served as an advocate for racial equality.

  11. Robert Maddox

    Robert Foster Maddox (April 4,1870 - 1965) was a mayor of Atlanta, Georgia. Son of early Atlanta settler and war hero Robert Flournoy Maddox, he was educated in public school then attended University of Georgia until 1887 when he completed studies at Harvard. He was Chairman of the board of the Atlanta & Lowry National Bank part of which had been founded by his father. In 1908, he served as a Fulton County Commissioner and the next year he was elected Atlanta's mayor.

  12. John Marshall Slaton

    John Marshall Slaton, or Jack Slaton, served two non-consecutive terms as the Governor of Georgia. Slaton was born on December 25, 1866, in Meriwether County, Georgia. Slaton received a master of arts degree with highest honors from the University of Georgia in 1886 where he joined Chi Phi Fraternity and the Phi Kappa Literary Society. Slaton married Sally Frances Grant in 1898.

  13. George Briggs

    George Briggs (May 6, 1805 - June 1, 1869) was a United States Representative from New York. Born near Broadalbin, Fulton County, he moved to Vermont in 1812 with his parents, who settled in Bennington. He attended the public schools, engaged in business as a dealer in hardware, was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1837 and returned to New York, settling in New York City in 1838 and continuing in the hardware business.

  14. M. Hoke Smith

    Michael Hoke Smith (September 2, 1855 - November 27, 1931) was a newspaper owner, United States Secretary of the Interior (1893-1896), Democratic Governor of Georgia (1907-1909,1911), and a United States Senator (1911-1920) from Georgia. Smith was born in Newton, North Carolina, and moved to Georgia in 1872 with his parents. He was primarily educated by his father, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

  18. Isaac Newton Ragsdale

    Isaac Newton Ragsdale (1859-1937) came to Atlanta in 1880 from Dallas, Georgia. He lived for many years in Oakland City and served as mayor there in 1908 before it was annexed into Atlanta. He was in the livestock business and from 1925 to 1926 he served as a Fulton County Commissioner. His time as its mayor came during a 1929 change to the city charter giving mayors a four year term which he was the first to serve.

    Kenneth Lee "Ken" Dixon (April 3, 1915 - June 29, 1986), was a prominent journalist who reported, edited, and penned columns for seven newspapers, including two in Louisiana -- Lake Charles and Baton Rouge.
