1. Jeff Widener

    Jeff Widener (born c. 1956) is the Associated Press photojournalist who took the world-famous picture of "The Unknown Rebel" in 1989 during the Tiananmen Square Protests. The photo depicts a lone protester who halted a column of advancing tanks for more than half an hour. Widener took the photo from the sixth floor of the Beijing Hotel, about half a mile away, through a 400mm lens. He was subsequently nominated for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for "Spot News Photography".

    Lyubov Denisova is a Russian marathon runner that tested positive for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio — the same finding that derailed 2006 Tour de France champion Floyd Landis. As of the 8th May, 2007, the ESMI website claims that she is represented by them and Hussein Makke, a list of their current athletes can be found here but include the convicted cheat Asmae Leghzaoui. In the Honolulu Advertiser it is claimed she is represented by Andrey Baranov.

  5. Wallace Rider Farrington

    Wallace Rider Farrington (May 3 1871-October 6 1933) was the sixth Territorial Governor of Hawaii, serving from 1921 to 1929. Prior to his term, he was editor of the "Honolulu Advertiser" and "Honolulu Star-Bulletin" newspapers. Farrington was born in Orono, Penobscot County, Maine on May 3 1871. An avid traveler, he found himself in Honolulu, Hawaii and was persuaded to stay to become the editor of the "Honolulu Advertiser".

  6. Robert Rees

    Robert Morrison "Bob" Rees (b. San Diego, 1938-d. Kailua, Oahu, November 1, 2005) was an advertising executive and journalist who wrote for the "Honolulu Weekly" and "Honolulu Advertiser". After graduating from Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley, Rees worked as an advertising executive on campaigns for Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi. He later moved to Hawaii, teaching at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

  7. Claus Spreckels

    Claus Spreckels, formally Adolph Claus J. Spreckels (July 9, 1828-December 26, 1908), "(his last name has also been spelled officially as Spreckles)", was a major industrialist in Hawai'i during the kingdom, republican and territorial periods of the islands' history. He also involved himself in several California enterprises. In 1880, he purchased the "Pacific Commercial Advertiser" and became a publisher.

  8. Joseph Rock

    Joseph Francis Charles Rock was an Austrian-American explorer, geographer, linguist and botanist. He was born in Vienna, Austria but moved to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1907, where he became an authority on the flora of these islands. From 1922–1949 he spent most of his time studying the flora, peoples and languages of southwest China, mainly in Yunnan, Sichuan, southwest Gansu and eastern Tibet. Many Asian plants that he collected can be seen in the Arnold Arboretum.

    James O. Goldsborough (born 1938) is an American journalist. He has worked for the San Francisco Examiner, Honolulu Advertiser, Arizona Republic, New York Herald Tribune, International Herald Tribune, Newsweek, San Jose Mercury News, and the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is a former Edward R. Murrow fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
