  5. Wally Byam

Wally taught a generation and more of ordinary persons how to travel to the near and far places of the world. He provided them with a mechanism in the form of a travel trailer, which he offered for sale. More basically, however, he gave them a concept, an idea, a dream come true. He taught by showing them that they could bring “home” with them on their travels, near or far, and that they could feel at home wherever they went. Where Wally Byam led, people eagerly followed.

In June of 2006, I decided I needed a major change in my life. Didn't really want it, but sometimes you just need to know when it's time to go. I decided to indulge an old desire, travelling the country seeing things I'd read about, meet new people, ride my bike and do brevets in as many regions as possible. I bought an Airstream trailer, a van for my bikes, and hit the road. It's worked out well. From Victoria, Canada to Mt.

I grew up in suburban MD, where I attended a Catholic HS and was probably known as the smart disabled chick. I eagerly escaped to the funkiness of Swarthmore. From Swarthmore, I went onto the factory of Harvard Law. I was a lawyer . . . for awhile. Now, I live in rural Virginia with my husband, dog and lots of squirrels and insects.
