Prior to writing "Castaway", she had been employed as a charlady, monkey keeper, waitress, stone mason's mate, life model, pastry cook, and concierge. She had run away from school at an early age and had no full-time schooling after her thirteenth birthday.

    Gerald W. Kingsland (8 March 1930 - 20 March 2000) was a journalist and writer born and raised in Whitchurch, Buckinghamshire, England. He was five times married (with five sons and two daughters from the total marriages). He died London, England from a heart attack in 2000 at age 70. After a stint in the British Army where he fought combat during the Korean War in 1951, he became a successful journalist and publisher in England, then a wine grower in Italy.

    James Gould Cozzens (August 13, 1903 - August 8, 1978) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning U.S. novelist. He is often grouped today with his contemporaries John O'Hara and John P. Marquand, but his work has generally been considered more challenging and less entertaining than theirs. He was quoted in a featured article in "Time" magazine: "I can't read ten pages of Steinbeck without throwing up."

  9. Philip Ashton

    Philip Ashton (1702-?) stayed as a castaway on uninhabited Roatan Island in the Bay of Honduras for 16 months in 1723/1724. His memoirs about his solitary stay (published in bookform in Boston in 1725) were not believed by everyone; some people believed the book was a novel in the style of Robinson Crusoe. However, unlike Robinson Crusoe, Ashton was genuine. He was born in Marblehead in New England in 1702 and married twice in his lifetime.

  11. Leendert Hasenbosch

    Leendert Hasenbosch was a Dutchman, an employee of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) who was set ashore as a castaway on uninhabited Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, as a punishment for sodomy. He wrote a diary until his death.

  12. Charles Barnard

    Captain Charles Barnard (1781-c.1840) was a famous castaway. In 1812 the British ship "Isabella", captained by George Higton, is shipwrecked off Eagle Island (part of the Falkland Islands). Most of the crew are rescued by the American sealer "Nanina", commanded by Captain Charles Barnard. However, realising that they would require more provisions for the expanded number of passengers, Barnard and a few others went out in a party to retrieve more food.

He was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of Viktor von Samek, and came to England via America. He starred in the BBC radio show Hi, Gang! along with Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, and appeared in many others. He was the first "castaway" on Desert Island Discs. He was a skilled musician and played the violin (badly in his shows).

    Kokan Oyadomari (1827-1905) was a disciple of the Chinese Annan (also Ahnan or Anan) and of Ason, a Chinese sailor or possibly a pirate. Annan was a castaway from a shipwreck along the coast of Okinawa, who took refuge in the cemetery of the mountains near Tomari. There is a legend which indicates that Annan was the master who taught the "kata Chinto" to Sokon Matsumura.
