  2. Sonia O'Sullivan

    Sonia O'Sullivan (born November 28, 1969) is an Irish runner from Cobh, County Cork. She was one of the leading female 5000 m runners for most of the 1990s and early 2000s. Her crowning achievement was a Gold medal at the 1995 World Athletics Championships.She won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics, narrowly beaten by the Romanian Gabriela Szabo and in front of third placed Ethiopian Gete Wami.

  3. Annie Moore

    Annie Moore (January 1, 1877 - 1923) was the first immigrant to the United States to pass through the Ellis Island facility in New York Harbor. Moore arrived from County Cork, Ireland aboard the steamship "Nevada" on January 1, 1892, her fifteenth birthday. As the first person to be processed at the newly opened facility, she was presented with a $10 gold piece. Moore was accompanied by her brothers Phillip and Anthony.

  4. Lewis Glucksman

    Dr Lewis L. Glucksman was a former Lehman Brothers trader and former chief executive officer of Lehman Brothers, Kuhn, Loeb Inc. Glucksman was born into a second generation Hungarian-Jewish family that lived on the upper west side of Manhattan New York City. He served as a teenage volunteer with the US Navy in World War II. Glucksman graduated from the College of William and Mary and later earned a Master's degree in business administration from New York University.

  5. Jack Doyle

    Jack Doyle (August 31 1913 in Cobh, Ireland - December 13 1978 in Paddington, London), known as "The Gorgeous Gael" was at one time or another contender British Boxing Championship, Hollywood actor and an accomplished tenor. He was born into a working class family in Queenstown (Cobh), in County Cork, Ireland in 1913. At 6 foot 3 Doyle was always good with his fists and in 1929 he joined the forces of the Irish Guards based in Wales.

  6. Stephen O'Halloran

    Stephen O'Halloran (born November 29 1987) in Cobh, Co. Cork is an Irish defender playing for Aston Villa. O'Halloran, a left-sided defender who broke into the Villa squad for their2006/2007 pre-season friendlies, has represented the Republic of Ireland at U15, U16, U17, U21 and senior level. O'Halloran signed for Aston Villa in 2003, and subsequently went out on loan to Wycombe Wanderers on October 20 2006, until January 2007.

  7. James O'Connor

    James O'Connor, D.D. (Sept 10 1823 – 1891) was the first Roman Catholic Archbishop of the Diocese of Omaha. Born in Queenstown, Ireland, he went to America at the age of fifteen. He was educated at St. Charles's Seminary, Philadelphia, and in the Propaganda College, Rome where he was ordained a priest in 1848. In 1885, the Diocese of Omaha was created, and Bishop O'Connor was appointed its first bishop. Bishop O'Connor died in 1891.

    Dr. James Roche Verling was born in Cobh, County Cork, Ireland in 1787. He graduated in Medicine from Edinburgh University, Scotland and became a surgeon in the British Army during the Peninsular War. After the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte and his exile in St. Helena after 1815 the British decided that Napoleon needed a personal physician.

  11. William Russell Grace

    William Russell Grace (born May 10, 1832, Cobh (Ireland); died March 21, 1904, New York) was the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York and the founder of W. R. Grace and Company. He began his business career in Peru, where he was a partner with the firm of John Bryce, later to become Grace Brothers & Co., and then W. R. Grace & Co. He was a renowned philanthropist, at one point contributing a quarter of the aid delivered to Ireland during the famine of the later 1870s.

    Daniel O'Donovan was born near Skibbereen, County Cork, one of seven surviving children of John and Elizabeth O'Donovan (née Connolly). The family moved to Cork City around 1910 and Dan was an early recruit to the Irish Volunteers. He paraded with the Cork Volunteers at the funeral of fellow West Cork man Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa in Dublin in 1915. He was later a prominent officer of the Cork No. 1 Brigade of the Irish Republican Army during the Irish War of Independence.
