  1. Thea Foss

    Thea Christiansen Foss (8 June 1857 - 7 June 1927) was the founder of Foss Maritime, the largest tugboat company in the western United States, and the real-life person on which the "Tugboat Annie" series was based. Thea came to the United States from Eidsberg, Norway and married Norwegian immigrant Andrew Foss in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1889 she started the Foss Launch Company, which eventually became the Seattle-based Foss Maritime.

    Eugene Noble Foss, (September 24, 1858-September 13, 1939) was a Representative and govenor from Massachusetts, as well as brother of George Edmund Foss. Born in West Berkshire, near St. Albans, Vermont, he attended the public schools, Franklin County Academy at St. Albans, Vermont, and the University of Vermont. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts in 1882 working in the manufacture of iron and steel.

  4. George E. Foss

    George Edmund Foss (July 2, 1863 - March 15, 1936) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois, brother of Eugene Noble Foss. Born in West Berkshire, Vermont, Foss attended the common schools, and was graduated from Harvard University in 1885. He attended Columbia Law School and the School of Political Science in New York City. He was graduated from Union College of Law at Chicago, Illinois, in 1889.

  5. Joe Foss

    Joseph Jacob "Joe" Foss (April 17, 1915-January 1, 2003) was a leading "ace" fighter pilot in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, a 1943 recipient of the Medal of Honor, a general in the Air National Guard, and the 20th Governor of South Dakota.

  6. Dickie Foss

    Sidney Richard 'Dickie' Foss (28 November 1912 - unknown) was an English football player and coach, who had a 30 year association with Chelsea. Born in Barking, Foss started out with amateur side Southall, before signing for Chelsea in 1936. Playing at half-back, Foss made 48 appearances for the club, and was one of only a handful of players to play for Chelsea both before and after World War II (the others being Dick Spence and Jimmy Argue).

  7. Craig Foss

    Craig Foss is a New Zealand politician, and currently serves as a member of Parliament. Foss was born in Lower Hutt, and attended Victoria University of Wellington. He worked in the banking sector, first for the Bank of New Zealand and then for Credit Suisse in London. In the 2005 election, Foss was a candidate for the National Party, standing in the Tukituki electorate and being ranked 44th on the party list.   8. Frank Foss

    Frank Kent Foss (May 9, 1895 - April 5, 1989) was an American athlete who competed in the men's pole vault. He competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics and won gold, beating Danish pole vaulter Henry Petersen. Foss graduated from Cornell University in 1917, where he was also a member of the Quill and Dagger society.

  9. Frank H. Foss

    Frank Herbert Foss (b. Augusta, Maine, September 20 1865 - d. Fitchburg, Massachusetts, February 15 1947) was a United States Representative from Massachusetts. He attended public schools in Augusta, Maine and graduated from Kent Hill (Maine) Seminary in 1886. He moved to Fitchburg in 1893. He worked for a general contractor in the construction of industrial plants.

  10. Henry Foss

    Henry Foss (1891-1986) was a civic leader in Tacoma, Washington, USA. He was the son of Norwegian immigrant parents, Andrew and Thea Foss, first owners and operators of Foss Launch and Tug Company. It is after his mother that the famed "Tugboat Annie" series was written. Henry Foss High School in Tacoma, Washington is named after him.

    Sam Walter Foss, June 19, 1858 - February 26,1911, was a librarian and poet whose most famous works included "The House by the Side of the Road" and "The Coming American." He was born in rural Candia, New Hampshire. Foss lost his mother at age four, worked on his father's farm and went to school in the winter. He graduated from Brown University in 1882, and would be considered illustrious enough to warrant having his name inscribed on the mace.

    Edward Foss (October 16, 1787 - July 27, 1870) was an English lawyer and biographer. He was born in London. He became a solicitor, and on his retirement from practice in 1840, devoted himself to the study of legal antiquities. His "Judges of England" (9 vols., 1848-1864) was regarded as a standard work, characterized by accuracy and extensive research. "Biographia Juridica, a Biographical Dictionary of English Judges", appeared shortly after his death.
