  1. Narendra Nayak

    Narendra Nayak is a well known rationalist from Mangalore, Karnataka, India. A postgraduate in Medical biochemistry, Narendra Nayak was an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the Centre for Basic Sciences, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore until the 25th November 2006 when he quit the job to continue full time his work in the field of the rationalist movement. He is the founder of Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association and has been its Secretary since 1976.

He acquired a taste for music from his father Thaniappa, a nadhaswaram vidwan. Young Gopalnath once saw the saxophone being played in the Mysore palace band set. Thrilled on hearing the vibrant tone of the saxophone, Gopalnath decided to master it.

  16. Ferdinand Kittel

    Reverend Ferdinand Kittel (1832-1903) was a priest and indologist with the Basel Mission in south India and worked in Mangalore, Madikeri and Dharwad in Karnataka. He is most famous for his studies of the Kannada language and for producing the first ever Kannada-English dictionary of about 70,000 words in 1894. He also composed numerous Kannada poems.     Budhisagar Krishnappa Kunderan (born 2 October, 1939 in Mulky, near Mangalore in Karnataka - died 23 June, 2006 in Glasgow, Scotland) was an Indian cricketer. He played as a wicket keeper for the most of his career, and was an exciting but unorthodox right handed batsman. Budhi Kunderan made his first appearance in first class cricket for the Cricket Club of India against the touring West Indies in 1958-59.

John Carnac joined the service of the East India Company as Captain in 1758 after serving with the 39th Regiment. He commanded at Patna in 1760 and in 1761 defeated the Delhi Emperor near Bihar. He became Brigadier-General in 1764 and defeated the Marathas in the Doab in 1765.

    Robert Henry Elliot (1837-1914) was an early British coffee planter in Mysore, India, and author of books upon plantation life in Mysore. According to Elliot's own account in "Gold, Sport, and Coffee Planting In Mysore", he arrived in Bombay in 1855 at 18 years of age. From there he sailed to Mangalore, then headed inland through the ghauts to the high plateau of Mysore. There he joined Frederick Green, who had begun his plantation in 1843.
