Alex Garland (born 1970) is a British novelist and screenwriter. Garland is the son of political cartoonist Nick Garland. He attended University College School, Hampstead, and the University of Manchester, where he studied art history. His first novel, "The Beach", was published in 1996 and drew on his experiences as a backpacker. The novel quickly became a cult classic and was made into a movie by Danny Boyle, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role of Richard.

I quit my shitty bank job in June 06 to go travel the world and I'm havin' a ball!! So far I've been stupidly drunk in Russia - guess that's par for the course, learnt to ride a horse in Mongolia, climbed 2 mountains in China, passed a PADI Open Water course and started to learn how to surf in the Philippines. Travelling has opened up a whole new world of interests and opportunities for me.
