  1. James Buchanan

    James Buchanan (April 23, 1791 - June 1, 1868) was the fifteenth President of the United States (1857-1861). He was the only President from Pennsylvania and the only President to never marry. As president he was a "doughface" who battled Stephen A. Douglas for control of the Democratic Party. Scholars consistently rank him as one of the two or three worst American presidents; although he claimed secession was illegal, he claimed going to war to stop it was also illegal.

Buchanan was born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, the son of Scottish immigrants, but his parents returned to the United Kingdom shortly after he was born and he was brought up in Larne. He joined a Glasgow shipping firm as an office boy when he was fourteen or fifteen, and was later promoted to be a clerk.

  4. James P. Buchanan

    James Paul Buchanan (30 April 1867-22 February 1937) served as U.S. Representative from the 10th district of Texas from 1913 until his death on 22 February 1937. He was the chair of the Appropriations committee from 1933 on. Buchanan Dam and the lake it forms, Lake Buchanan, are named in his honor. Both are located about 12 miles (19 km) west of Burnet, Texas.

He was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1810 and became an apprentice to a firm of Glasgow merchants in 1825.     Elwood C. Buchanan, Sr was an American jazz trumpeter and teacher who became an early mentor of Miles Davis. Buchanan was born in St Louis, Missouri, and was trained in music by Joseph Gustat, the principal trumpeter with the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and died in Watertown, Massachusetts. In 1918, Buchanan enlisted in the United States Navy at age 18.
