  1. James Longstreet

    James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 - January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War, the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his "Old War Horse." He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, but also with Gen. Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater.

  2. Thomas J. Wood

    Thomas John Wood (September 25, 1823 - February 26, 1906) was a Union General during the American Civil War. Wood was born in rural Munfordville, Kentucky, the son of George Thomas Wood, an army officer, and Elizabeth Helm. He was an 1845 graduate of the United States Military Academy, finishing 5th in a class of 41. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers.

    William Calvin Oates (either November 30 or December 1, 1833 - September 9, 1910) was a Confederate colonel during the American Civil War and later the Democratic Governor of Alabama from 1894 to 1896. William C. Oates was born in Pike County, Alabama to William and Sarah (Sellers) Oates, a poor farming family. At the age of 17, he believed that he had killed a man in a violent brawl and left home for Florida.

    Samuel “Sam” Rush Watkins was a noted Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. He is known today for his memoir "Company Aytch: Or, a Side Show of the Big Show", often heralded as one of the best primary sources about the common soldier's Civil War experience. Watkins was born on June 26, 1839 near Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, and received his formal education at Jackson College in Columbia.

Kershaw was born at Camden, South Carolina, admitted to the bar in 1843, and was a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1852 to 1856.     John Austin Wharton (July 23, 1828 - April 6, 1865) was a lawyer, plantation owner, and Confederate general during the American Civil War. He is considered one of the Confederacy's best tactical cavalry commanders. Wharton was born near Nashville, Tennessee, as the only child of Sarah Groce Wharton and William H. Wharton, later a leading politician during the Texas Revolution. When he was still an infant, the family moved to what became Brazoria County, Texas.

  7. David S. Stanley

    David Sloane Stanley (June 1, 1828 - March 13, 1902) was a Union general in the American Civil War and a Medal of Honor recipient. Stanley was born in Cedar Valley, Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1852 and went to the Western frontier to survey railroad routes. He engaged in Indian fighting and was promoted to captain shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. He fought at several battles in Missouri, including the Battle of Wilson's Creek.

    Charles Cruft (January 12, 1826 - March 23, 1883) was a teacher, lawyer, railroad executive, and a Union general during the American Civil War. Cruft was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Wabash College in 1842.     Eli Long (June 16, 1837 - January 5, 1903) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Long was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, and graduated from the Frankfort, Kentucky, military school (the Kentucky Military Institute) in 1855. In 1856, he was appointed second lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Cavalry. He was later promoted successively to first lieutenant and captain, serving in a variety of frontier outposts and occasionally battling hostile Indians.

    Ole Johnson (1838 - November 4, 1886) was a Norwegian-American soldier in the American Civil War. Ole was born in Telemark, Norway in 1838. At age 6 his family emigrated to America, settling in Dane County, Wisconsin. He became a school teacher in Stoughton. When the Civil War broke out, Johnson joined the Scandinavian Regiment and was appointed captain of Company B. After the battle at Perryville, Johnson was promoted to the rank of major.

    Roger Quarles Mills (March 30, 1832-September 2, 1911) was an American politician and an officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Born in Todd County, Kentucky, he attended the common schools and moved to Texas in 1849. There he studied law, passed the bar and began practicing. He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1859 until 1860, when he enlisted in the Confederate States Army.

  12. Marcus Joseph Wright

    Marcus Joseph Wright (1831- ?) was an American soldier and author, born at Purdy, Tenn. He was admitted to the bar, and practiced at Memphis. During the Civil War he was military governor of Columbus, Ky., from February, 1862 until its evacuation, and with his regiment was present at Belmont and Shiloh. After serving on the staff of Gen. B. F. Cheatham, he became brigadier general, December 13, 1862, and fought at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge.

  13. Daniel Weisiger Adams

    Daniel W. Adams, general in the army of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, was born in Frankfort, Kentucky on May 1, 1821. He commanded the 1st Louisiana Regulars and fought in multiple major battles, principally the Battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, and Chickamauga. He was wounded several times, losing his right eye at the Battle of Shiloh, and was captured at Chickamauga.

Cooper was a grandson of tragedian Thomas Cooper and a great-grandson of Captain Edward Dunscomb, a noted New York soldier in the American Revolutionary War. As a young man, Cooper served in a Georgia unit during the American Civil War in many battles, including Chickamauga.
