    Percy Schmeiser is a farmer and seed developer from Western Canada that was involved in a legal battle with Monsanto on farmers' rights versus patent law. In 2000, he received the Mahatma Gandhi Award from India for the Betterment of Human Kind in a Non-Violent Way. Mr. Schmeiser is a strong advocate of designing patent law so that it protects farmers' right to use their seeds and plants from year to year.

    David Grandison Fairchild (April 7 1869 - August 6 1954) was an American botanist and plant explorer. Fairchild was responsible for the introduction of more than 20,000 exotic plants and varieties of established crops into the United States, including mangos, alfalfa, nectarines, dates, horseradish, bamboos, and flowering cherries. He was a member of the Fairchild family, descendants of Thomas Fairchild of Stratford, Connecticut.

  4. Nongqawuse

    Nongqawuse was the Xhosa prophetess whose prophecies led to a millennialist movement that culminated in the Xhosa cattle-killing crisis of 1856–1857. In April or May 1856, the teenaged Nongqawuse and her friend Nombanda went to fetch water from a pool near the mouth of the Gxarha River. When she returned, Nongqawuse told her uncle and guardian Mhlakaza, a Xhosa spiritualist, that she had met the spirits of three of her ancestors.
