- Elizabeth Bentley
Elizabeth Terrill Bentley (January 1, 1908-November 18, 1963) was an American spy for the Soviet Union from 1938 until 1945. In 1945 she defected from the Communist Party and Soviet intelligence and became an informer for the U.S. She exposed two networks of spies, ultimately naming over 80 Americans who had engaged in espionage for the Soviets.

Vitaly Yurchenko (b. 1936) was a KGB agent in the Soviet Union. In 1985, after twenty-five years of service in the KGB, he defected to the United States during an assignment in Rome. In the following interrogations by the CIA, he accused two American agents of working for the KGB, Ronald Pelton and Edward Lee Howard. While Pelton was later convicted, Howard fled the US before he could be questioned.

Igor Nikolayevich Larionov is a retired Russian ice hockey player. Along with Viacheslav Fetisov, he was instrumental in breaking the barrier that stopped Soviet players from joining the NHL. He primarily played the center position, and is considered one of the best passers of all time.
- Munir Redfa
Munir Redfa (1934 - 2000) was an Iraqi Fighter Pilot, of Iraqi-Assyrian origin who defected to Israel in 1966 by flying a MiG 21 belonging to the Iraqi Air Force to Israel. In what is considered one of the Mossad's most successful operations, Redfa's entire extended family was smuggled safely out of Iraq to Israel. The hijacked MiG fighter was later loaned to the United States for testing and intelligence analysis.

- No Kum-Sok
No Kum-Sok (later Kenneth Rowe) (born c. 1932) was a lieutenant in the North Korean Air Force during the Korean War who defected to South Korea. In 1953, he flew his MiG-15 to the Kimpo air base in South Korea, claiming that he wanted to get away from the "red deceit". He received a $100,000 reward for defecting with his aircraft, which he claimed to have not heard about prior to his defection.
- Rainer Rupp
Rainer Rupp (born 1945 in Saarlouis, Germany) was a top spy who worked under the pseudonyms Mosel and later Topas for the GDR in the NATO headquarters in Brussels from 1977 until 1989, releasing documents of the highest importance to the Eastern Bloc. Rupp grew up in West Germany with strong leftist political leanings. In 1968, as a student in Mainz, work as a spy for the GDR was suggested to him, and he agreed out of conviction.

- Józef Światło
Józef Światło was a high-ranking official of the Ministry of Public Security of Poland (deputy director of 10th Department). After the death of Stalin and the arrest of Lavrentiy Beria in 1953, afraid for his own life, he defected to the West on 5 December of that year in Berlin. This event shook the Polish United Workers' Party, caused the reform of the Polish security apparatus and was one of the factors leading to the liberalization of the Polish October.

Alla Sizova is a twentieth-century ballet dancer, best known for her work with the Kirov Ballet. She was the preferred dance partner of Rudolph Nureyev before his defection, and Nureyev is rumoured to have said in his later years that Sizova was the only thing that could conceivably entice him back to the Soviet Union. Amongst other roles, Sizova received great acclaim as Princess Aurora in the 1964 Kirov production Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty opposite Yuri Solovyov.

Oskar Pastior (October 20, 1927 - October 4, 2006) was Romanian-born German poet and translator. He was the only German member of Oulipo. Born into a Transylvanian Saxon family in Sibiu, he was deported in 1945 to the Gulag by Soviet authorities. He returned to Romania in 1949, and started training in German studies at the University of Bucharest in 1955.
