Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 - 10 April 1962) was a British musician and artist who, until his early death, worked in a style related to Abstract Expressionism. Sutcliffe was an art school friend of John Lennon and was the original bassist of the English rock band The Beatles for two years. Sutcliffe and Lennon are credited with naming the group after Buddy Holly's band the Crickets.
