  1. Gérard Genette

    Gérard Genette is a French literary theorist, associated in particular with the structuralist movement and such figures as Roland Barthes and Claude Lévi-Strauss, from whom he adapted the concept of "bricolage". Uglow was born in London and studied at Camberwell College of Arts from 1948 to 1950 under William Coldstream, who influenced Uglow greatly. When Coldstream left to teach at the Slade School of Art, University College, London (London University) in 1951, Uglow transferred there as well.     Barbara Kolb (b. Hartford, Connecticut, February 10, 1939) is an American composer. Her music uses sound masses and often creates vertical structures through simultaneous rhythmic or melodic units (motifs or figures). She was the first woman composer to win the Prix de Rome. She received her B.M. (cum laude) and M.M. degrees from the Hartt College of Music (now The Hartt School) at the University of Hartford, and studied with Arnold Franchetti and Gunther Schuller.

His talents as an officer were recognized by his superiors, and he rose quickly in the ranks.

The piece features no melodic figuration but rather clouds created by only one note, the low D above cello C, repeated quickly enough by each player to be heard as nearly continuous.

Hamill was born in Chicago, but her family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut shortly after where she spent the rest of her childhood. She has a brother and a sister. Hamill started ice skating when she was eight years old on her grandparent's backyard pond. Her skates were too big, so her grandmother would put stuffing in the toes to make them fit.

    Tonya Maxine Harding (born November 12, 1970) is an American former figure skater. Despite a tough childhood in an unstable family, as well as being plagued by asthma (aggravated by smoking), she became an elite figure skater. She won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships twice and placed second in the 1991 World Championships. She was the second woman, and the first American woman, to complete a triple axel jump in competition.

Ando is the first and only female skater to successfully complete a quadruple jump in competition. Ando landed the first ladies' quadruple Salchow at the 2002 Junior Grand Prix Final. In 2006, she entered Chukyo University in her hometown.

    Zhang Dan (born October 4, 1985 in Harbin, China) is a Chinese figure skater. She won the bronze medal in pairs at the 2005 World Figure Skating Championships with partner Zhang Hao. She and her partner (who are unrelated) have twice won the World Junior title. At the 2006 Winter Olympics, they won a silver medal despite a bad fall for her in which she injured her knee, after which she decided to continue the program despite being in continued pain.

    Alissa Czisny (born June 25, 1987), is an American figure skater. She is the 2007 US National bronze medalist. In 2005, Czisny gained international attention when won Skate Canada International and placed second at Skate America. She qualified for the 2005-2006 Grand Prix Final and placed sixth. She went on to the 2006 US Championships in St. Louis, where she was a heavy favorite to place in the top three. However, Czisny fell multiple times and finished seventh overall.

    Brian Anthony Boitano (born October 22, 1963 in Mountain View, California) is an Italian-American figure skater from Sunnyvale, California. He is a four-time US National Champion (1985-1988), two-time World Champion (1986, 1988) and the 1988 Olympic gold medalist. He became a professional skater following the 1988 season, and once again in 1994.

  33. Shen Xue

    Shen Xue (born November 13, 1978 in Harbin, China) is a pairs figure skater from China. Along with her partner Zhao Hongbo, they became the first World Champion pairs team from China, and also the first to win an Olympic medal. Shen and Zhao were the first Chinese pair to be competitive on the senior international level. They are the 2007 World Champions and 2007 Grand Prix Final Champions.

  34. Kurt Browning

    Kurt Browning (born June 18, 1966) is a Canadian figure skater. Born in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and raised in Caroline, Alberta, Browning was a four-time Canadian figure skating champion and four-time World Champion. He represented Canada in three Winter Olympics, 1988 (finishing 8th overall), 1992 (6th) and 1994 (5th), and was given the privilege of carrying the Canadian flag during the opening ceremonies of the 1994 games in Lillehammer, Norway.

    Todd James Eldredge (born August 28, 1971 in Chatham, Massachusetts) is an American figure skater. He is a six-time national champion (1990, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002) and won a world title in 1996. After finishing sixth in his third Olympics, the 2002 Winter Olympics, Eldredge announced his retirement from competitive skating. He is currently touring and headlining with Stars on Ice.

  38. Tai Babilonia

    Tai Reina Babilonia (born September 22, 1959) is a U.S. figure skater, the partner of Randy Gardner. Their coach was John Nicks. The pair won the gold medal at the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships. They were medal favorites at the 1980 Olympics but were forced to withdraw due to an injury to Gardner. Babilonia was the first figure skater of African American descent to win U.S. and World titles.

  39. Evgeni Plushenko

    Evgeni Viktorovich Plushenko, or Yevgeny Viktorovich Plyushchenko (born November 3, 1982 in Solnechny, Khabarovsk Krai, Soviet Union (Russia) is a Russian figure skater, the seven-time National Champion, five-time European Champion, three-time World Champion, 2006 Winter Olympics gold medalist, and four-time Grand Prix Final gold medalist.

  40. Debi Thomas

    Debi Thomas, (born March 25, 1967) is a figure skater and the first African American to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. Thomas won the 1986 U.S. National ladies' figure skating title and the Ladies' title at the 1986 World Figure Skating Championships, those achievements earned Thomas as the ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year that year. She represented the Crystal Springs Figure Skating club and was coached by Alex MacGowan.
