- Gichin Funakoshi
Gichin Funakoshi was one of Okinawan karate masters who introduced karate to the Japanese mainland in 1921. His student, Hironori Ohtsuka and his son, Funakoshi Gigo modernized the system of karate that he originally developed. This was accomplished predominantly by lowering the height of some techniques such as zuki (punches), shuto uchi (knife hand strike) and adding kicking techniques above the waist.
- Morihiro Saito
Morihiro Saito was an aikido teacher with many students around the world. He began his aikido training under the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, in Iwama in 1946 after having practiced some kendo, judo and karate. Although other students such as Koichi Tohei trained with Ueshiba for more years than Saito did, Saito's work allowed him to train almost as an uchideshi, for long periods as the only student.

- Nakayama Hakudo
Nakayama Hakudo, also known as Nakayama Hiromichi, was a Japanese martial artist and founder of the iaido style Musō Shinden-ryū. He is the only person to have received both "judan" (10th degree) and "hanshi" (master instructor) ranks in kendo, iaido, and jodo from the All Japan Kendo Federation. In addition, he held an instructor's license in Shinto Muso-ryū and a Menkyo kaiden in Shindo Munen-ryū making him the 7th soke of that system.

- Nobuyoshi Tamura
Nobuyoshi Tamura was born on 1933-03-02 in Osaka, Japan. His father was a kendo teacher. Tamura entered the Aikikai Hombu Dojo around 1953 as an uchi-deshi (live-in student) of aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba. He was one of Ueshiba's favorite pupils and since 1964 has greatly contributed to the development of aikido in Europe and France in particular. He is the National Technical Director (DTN) of the FFAB (French Federation of Aikido and Budo).

- Hirokazu Kobayashi
Hirokazu Kobayashi (b. December 14, 1929 - d. August 28, 1998) was a Japanese aikido teacher and student of the founder of aikido Morihei Ueshiba. At 35 he became the youngest person awarded 8th dan rank by the founder. Already by the age of 7 years he was studying karate, kendo and judo. At 16 he was stationed as a kamikaze pilot on an aircraft carrier. When it came to his deployment a technical defect prevented his airplane from joining his flight.
- Teruyuki Okazaki
Teruyuki Okazaki (b June 22, 1931), a ninth degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, is the founder, chairman and chief instructor of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), which functions under the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Along with Funakoshi and Nakayama, Okazaki helped found the JKA Instructor training program. Okazaki has published a book on his experiences titled "Perfection of Character". Hideyuki Ashihara (December 5, 1944--April 24, 1995) was a Japanese martial artist who founded the Ashihara karate system in 1980. This Karate style is based on Kyokushin Karate. He was born near Hiroshima and raised by his grandparents in the small village of Nomicho. He began studying Kendo at the age of 10. In 1960, when he was 15 years old, he moved to Tokyo where he worked for the next six years at a gas station.

Masayoshi Kori Hisataka (Seiki Kudaka in Okinawan, b. April 22, 1907) was the founder of Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate. Honda Toshiaki was a Japanese political economist in the late Edo period. Born in Echigo, Toshiaki came to Edo to study astronomy, mathematics and Kendo. At the age of 24, he opened his own school. He wrote Keisei Hisaku, in which he proposed lifting a ban of a foreign trade and colonization of Ezo. He died in 1820.

- Nishimura Koku
Nishimura Koku (1915 - June, 2002) was a master Japanese bamboo flute player, teacher, and craftsman. He played an especially raw style of flute he called the "kyotaku", similar to the shakuhachi and very similar to the hocchiku. His teacher was Kyochiku Tani, a "komuso" monk. Nishimura Koku himself became a "komuso" and wandered Japan for ten years, playing "kyotaku". His son, Koryu, continues to play and teach kyotaku in Kumamoto, Kumamoto.
