  2. Gentile da Fabriano

    Gentile da Fabriano was an Italian painter known for his participation in the International Gothic style. Gentile was born in or near Fabriano, in the Marche. His mother died some time before 1380 and his father, Niccolò di Giovanni Massi, retired to a monastery in the same year, where he died in 1385. He worked in various places in central Italy, mostly in Tuscany. His best known works are his "Adoration of the Magi" (1423) and "Flight into Egypt".

    Mario Moretti (born 1946 in Porto San Giorgio, Marche, Italy) is a founding member of the 2nd Red Brigades, who kidnapped and killed Aldo Moro on May 9, 1978. The circumstances of this assassination are still not clear. It is known, however, that Mario Moretti was the only person to talk to Moro during the 55 days of imprisonment.   6. Joyce Lussu

    Joyce Salvadori, better known by her married name Joyce Lussu (8 May, 1912 - 4 November, 1998), was an Italian writer, translator and partisan. She was bon in Florence as Gioconda Salvadori to parents from the Marche of English origins. Her father, Guglielmo Salvadori, was a positivist philosopher, Anglophile and aristocrat. As opponents of Italian fascism the family moved abroad.

    Luigi Fagioli (June 9, 1898 - June 20, 1952) was an Italian champion race car driver. Born in the small city of Osimo, Ancona Province in the Marche region of central Italy, as a boy Luigi Fagioli was fascinated by the relatively new invention of the automobile and the ensuing racing. Blessed with great natural driving instincts, a young Fagioli spent several years participating in hillclimbing and sports car races before turning to automobile racing in 1926.

  9. Fernando Rossi

    Fernando Rossi (born 3 September 1946) is an Italian politician. Born in Portomaggiore, he was elected to represent the Marche region at the Italian general election, 2006 for the Party of Italian Communists (PdCI). Due to his opposition to the party line and the treasury in an interview with "Il Giornale", he was expelled from the PdCI.

    Giovanni Conti (november 17 1882 - March 1 1957) was a deputy of the Kingdom of Italy and a senator in the Italian Republic. He was born in Montegranaro, Marche. He became member of the Italian Republican Party in 1912 and was elected into the Italian Parliament in 1921. He died in Rome in 1957.

  11. Pier Leone Ghezzi

    Pier Leone Ghezzi (28 June 1674 - March 1755) was an Italian Rococo painter and caricaturist active in Rome. Ghezzi was born in Comunanza, in what is now the Marche. His father, Giuseppe Ghezzi, (1634-1721), also trained Antonio Amorosi, and was a secretary to the Roman Accademia di San Luca. Pier Leone himself joined the Academy in 1705. He was the godson of Carlo Maratta. Pier Leone is known for his frescoes in the Villa Falconieri of Frascati.

    Leopoldo Elia (born November 4, 1925) is an Italian politician. Born in Fano, Marche, he was judge of the Constitutional Court and briefly Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1994.

  13. Vincenzo Cardarelli

    Vincenzo Cardarelli, pseudonym of Nazzareno Cardarelli was an Italian journalist, writer and poet. Cardarelli was born in Corneto, Lazio, to a family of Marche origin. His studies were irregular and he tried different jobs. In 1906, where he had moved to, he began his journalist career.

  14. Pietro Paolo Floriani

    Pietro Paolo Floriani (1585-1638) was a 17th century Italian engineer and architect of military and theatrical buildings. Historically, he is a key figure in his native town of Macerata and throughout the region of the Marche, thanks to his adventurous life as a man of arms, literary figure and military architect. In 1654 he wrote a treatise on the art of war and fortification.

  15. Valentino Bompiani

    Valentino Silvio Bompiani (September 27 1898 - February 23 1992) was an Italian publisher, writer and playwright. Born in Ascoli Piceno (Marche), in 1929 he founded the publishing house carrying his name, which became one of the most important in Italy. It is currently part of Rizzoli-Corriere della Sera group. He debuted as playwright in 1931 with "L'amante virtuosa". His masterwork is considered "Albertina" of 1945.

  16. Bernardino Baldi

    Bernardino Baldi (June 5, 1533 - October 12, 1617), was an Italian mathematician and writer. Baldi descended from a noble family from Urbino, Marche, where he was born. He pursued his studies at Padua, and is said to have spoken about sixteen languages during his lifetime, though according to Tiraboschi the inscription on his tomb limits the number to twelve. The appearance of the plague at Padua forced him to return to his native city.

  17. Dorino Serafini

    Teodoro "Dorino" Serafini (July 22, 1909 - July 5, 2000) was a motorcycle racer and Formula One driver from Italy. A native of Pesaro (Marche) he participated in one World Championship Grand Prix on September 3, 1950, where he finished second and scored 3 championship points, his points being halved as he shared the drive with Alberto Ascari. Serafini also competed in several non-Championship Formula One races.

  18. Gianluca Luisi

    Gianluca Luisi is an Italian pianist known for his interpretions of J.S.Bach whose complete Well Tempered Clavier he recorded. Luisi studied at “G.Rossini” Conservatory, Pesaro under the guide of Franco Scala and, later, at the piano Academy in Imola with Giovanni Valentini, Boris Petrushansky and Piero Rattalino. Luisi now teaches at the Recanati Piano Academy of the Marche.

  19. Guidantonio da Montefeltro

    Guidantonio da Montefeltro (1377 - February, 1443) was count of Urbino in Italy from 1403 until his death. In 1403, at the death of his father Antonio, Guidantonio inherited the family lands in the Marche. Later he abandoned the Papal suzerainty allying to King Ladislas of Naples, who made him "Grand connestabile" of the Kingdom of Naples in 1411. Excommunicated by Pope Gregory XII, he took advantage of that move to conquer Assisi.

    Enzio or Enzo (Italianisation of Heinz, diminutive of Heinrich) (circa 1224 - 1272) was an Italian nobleman, general, and King of Sardinia. Born at Palermo, he was an illegitimate son of the Emperor Frederick II by Adelaide. Enzio was the eldest of the illegitimate sons of Frederick, and allegedly the favourite one. He had a pleasant personality and a strong physical resemblance to his father.

  22. Serafino Mazzolini

    Serafino Mazzolini (June 9 1890, Arcevia, the Marche-February 23 1945, San Felice del Benaco, Lombardy) was an Italian lawyer, fascist politician, and journalist. He founded a nationalist group in Macerata, and soon became editor of the daily newspaper "L'Unione". An active irredentist and advocate of Italy's entry into World War I, he was a volunteer soldier in 1915, and was awarded a War Merit Cross.

  23. Nolfo da Montefeltro

    Nolfo da Montefeltro (born Sighinolfo; c. 1290 - 1364) was count of Montefeltro from 1323 to 1360. He was the son of Federico I da Montefeltro, who had been slain by the people of the city in revolt against him. In 1323 Nolfo, now a leader of the Ghibelline part in the Marche, reconquered the city by defeting the Papal commander, Ferrantino Malatesta. His first move as lord was the assassination of all his father's enemies.

  24. Paolo Corallini

    Paolo Corallini is an aikido teacher. He holds today the grade of 7th dan in Iwama Ryu Aikido and 5th dan Iwama Ryu aiki-ken and aiki-jo (the latter are the highest level of weapon-grades in Iwama Ryu aikido). Corallini began his training in the late 1960s and has been appointed by Morihiro Saito as shihan (top official representative) for Iwama Ryu.

  27. Leopoldo Sabbatini

    Leopoldo Sabbatini (b. 14 July 1861, Camerino, Marche, Italy; d. 1914, Milano) was an Italian lawyer, the first dean and president of Bocconi University, the first business school in Italy. His parents were Eugenio Sabbatini and Silvia Piermarini. He started to study law in 1879 at the University of Pisa, graduating with a thesis on commercial law in 1883. He also married very young, in 1880.

  28. Pandolfo Ii Malatesta

    Pandolfo II Malatesta was an Italian condottiero. The son of Malatesta I Malatesta, he fought under Werner von Urslingen and Gil de Albornoz. Later served Galeazzo II Visconti of Milan, but raised the jealousy of Bernabò Visconti and fled to the Marche. Later held a condotta for Florence against Pisa and fought against John Hawkwood.     According to legend, Rufinus of Assisi (sometimes "Rufino") is the patron saint of Assisi, Italy, and was the city's first bishop. He was responsible for converting Assisi to Christianity in 238 A.D. (it should be noted that there is some dispute as to whether these events took place in the first or third century). He is said to have died as a martyr at Costano, but there is no historical record of this.

    Alrude, Countess of Bertinoro was a 12th century Italian noblewoman who, in 1172, ended the siege of Aucona. "Aucona" is likely to have been a reference to the city of Ancona, now in the Marche region of Italy. According to a historical account written some time after the siege, Alrude led an army into battle and dealt a crushing blow to imperial troops under Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor.
