  2. August Ferdinand Möbius

    August Ferdinand Möbius (November 17, 1790 - September 26, 1868, was a German mathematician and theoretical astronomer. He was born in Schulpforta, Saxony, Germany and died in Leipzig. He is best known for his discovery of the Möbius strip, a non-orientable two-dimensional surface with only one side when embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space. It was independently discovered by Johann Benedict Listing around the same time.

  3. Paul Julius Möbius

    Paul Julius Möbius (surname sometimes spelled Möebius was a German neurologist who was born in Leipzig. Prior to entering the medical field in 1873, he studied philosophy and theology at the universities of Leipzig, Jena and Marburg. Möbius spent most of his medical career in Leipzig, doing clinical work as well as being a physician in his private practice.

  5. Johann Benedict Listing

    Johann Benedict Listing was a German mathematician. Listing was born in Frankfurt and died in Göttingen. In 1847, he wrote a famous article on topology, although he had introduced the term in correspondence some years earlier. He (independently) discovered the properties of the half-twisted strip at the same time as August Ferdinand Möbius, and went further in exploring the properties of strips with higher-order twists (paradromic rings).

    Hermann Hankel was a German mathematician who was born in Halle, Germany and died in Schramberg (near Tübingen), Germany. He studied and worked with, among others, Möbius, Riemann, Weierstrass and Kronecker.

  9. Karl Wilhelm Feuerbach

    Karl Wilhelm Feuerbach was a German geometer and the son of legal scholar Paul Johann Anselm Ritter von Feuerbach. After receiving his doctorate at age 22, he became a professor of mathematics at the Gymnasium at Erlangen. In 1822 he wrote a small book on mathematics noted mainly for a theorem at the bottom of one of the pages on the nine-point circle. Shortly before his death he introduced homogeneous coordinates, independently of Möbius.

  10. Sabine John

    Sabine John, née Möbius, divorced Paetz is a retired East German heptathlete. She won the silver medals at the 1982 European Championships and the 1983 World Championships, both times behind Ramona Neubert. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul she won the silver medal. Her personal best score in the heptathlon was 6946 points, achieved in May 1984 in Potsdam. In Germany only Sabine Braun has a better result.
