Both novels deal with the racial tensions between haoles (whites) and the indigenous Hawaiians, and illustrate the challenge for characters who, as the product of mixed-race marriages, must try to bridge the two cultures and overcome prejudice from both camps.

Randy California (born Randy Craig Wolfe; February 20, 1951 - January 2, 1997) was a guitarist, singer and songwriter and one of the original members of the rock group Spirit, formed in 1967. Randy was born into a musical family in Los Angeles, and spent his early years studying varied styles at the family's Hollywood nightclub, the "Ash Grove". He was fifteen years old when they moved to New York and he met Jimi Hendrix in 1966.

In 1879 he obtained his medical doctorate from Strassburg, and afterwards was a medical assistant in Strassburg under Adolf Kussmaul (1822-1902), and in Berlin under Oskar Lassar (1849-1907). From 1884-86 he researched leprosy in the Hawaiian Islands. In 1887 he became a specialist of dermatology and venereal disease in Hamburg.

Lawrence McCully Judd (March 20, 1887 - October 4, 1968) was the seventh Territorial Governor of Hawai'i. Devoted to the Hansen's Disease-afflicted residents of Kalaupapa on Molokai, having made several fact-finding tours during his tenure in the Hawaii State Senate and having overhauled the system of governance in the leper colony as territorial governor, Judd became Kalaupapa's resident superintendent in 1947.

Edwin Bradfield Liloa "Sonny" Chillingworth was a slack-key guitar player from Hawaii and is widely regarded as one of the most influential slack key guitarists in history. Chillingworth died in 1994 from cancer. Chillingworth started playing the guitar at age twelve when he was living with his grandfather, Harry Purdy, on Moloka'i. He learned the Hawaiian style by listening, watching and imitating. One day his father brought him a Victrola and some records.
