  12. Charles Pollard Olivier

    Charles Pollard Olivier (1884-August 14, 1975) was an American astronomer. Charles grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia, and he lived close to the University of Virginia. In 1901 he became an assistant at the nearby Leander McCormick Observatory, and in 1905 he was Vanderbilt fellow at the observatory. He completed his Ph.D. in astronomy by 1911, with a dissertation disproving the existence of stationary meteor radiants.

    Louis Olivier was a political figure in Lower Canada. He was born Louis-Marie-Olivier Olivier at Berthier in 1758, the son of a French soldier from Paris. He became a merchant at Berthier and also served as postmaster. Olivier was a member of the local militia, later becoming major, and served during the War of 1812. In 1800, he was named a justice of the peace for Trois-Rivières district and a commissioner for the trial of small claims in 1808.

He was born in Berthier-en-Haut, Lower Canada in 1816, the grandson of Louis Olivier, and studied at the Séminaire de Nicolet. He was admitted to the bar in 1839 and set up practice at Berthier-en-Haut. He helped establish the newspaper "Écho des campagnes" there in 1846.
