  1. Rodolfo Armando Philippi

    Rodolfo Armando (or Rudolph Amandus) Philippi (14 September 1808-23 July 1904) was a German-Chilean paleontologist and zoologist. He left his native Germany as a young man because he thought he was gravely ill and preferred to die in the mild climate of the Mediterranean region. He recovered and did considerable work there, including "Abbildungen" (illustrated monographs), before moving to Santiago, Chile in 1851.

  2. Friedrich Adolf Philippi

    Friedrich Adolf Philippi (October 15, 1809, Berlin - August 29, 1882, Rostock) was a Lutheran theologian of Jewish origin. He was the son of a wealthy Jewish banker, a friend of Mendelssohn. Converted to Christianity in 1829, he studied philosophy and theology at Berlin and Leipzig (Ph.D. 1831), and became successively a teacher at a private school in Dresden and at the "Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium" at Berlin (1833).

  3. Don Philippi

    Don Philippi (October 2 1930-January 26 1993) was a noted translator of Japanese and Ainu and a musician. Born in Los Angeles, Philippi studied at the University of Southern California before going to Japan in 1957 on a Fulbright scholarship to study at the Kokugakuin University. In Japan he became an expert in classical Japanese and Ainu. Philippi is known for his translation of the "Kojiki" and the ancient Shinto prayers known as "norito".

  4. Epaphroditus

    Tribune Claudius Tiberius Epaphroditus (ca. 11 - 95) is a saint of the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, first Bishop of Philippi, and of Andriacia in Asia Minor, and first Bishop of Terracina, Italy. There is little evidence that these were all the same man. His Roman name was Erastus.

  5. Timothy

    Timothy was a first-century Christian bishop who died about AD 80. Evidence from the New Testament also has him functioning as an apostolic delegate or coadjutor. Saint Timotheos is venerated as a saint and martyr by the Eastern Orthodox Church and in addition as an apostle by the Greek Orthodox Church, with his feast day on January 22 (old style calendar).

    Gnaeus Domitius Calvinus was a Roman general, senator and consul (in 53 and 40 BC) who was a loyal partisan of Caesar and Octavianus. Domitius Calvinus came from a noble family and was elected consul in 53 BC, despite a notorious electoral scandal. He was on Caesar’s side during the Civil War with Pompey. At the decisive battle of Pharsalus he commanded the center of Caesar’s army. After the battle he became governor of Asia.

  7. Lemuel Chenoweth

    Lemuel Chenoweth (1811-1887) was one of nineteenth century America's master covered bridge builders. He was a carpenter, legislator and self-educated architect who designed and built numerous covered bridges for the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike system of western Virginia (now West Virginia) as authorized by the General Assembly of Virginia between 1846 and 1860.   8. Quintus Labienus

    Quintus Labienus (d. 39 BC), the son of Titus Labienus, was a Roman republican general, later in the service of Parthia. After Julius Caesar was a murdered in 44 BC, Labienus took the side of Brutus and Cassius, the latter whom he served in the capacity of an ambassador to the Parthians. After Brutus and Cassius were defeated at Philippi, Labienus joined the Parthians. When the Parthians invaded the Roman territories in 40 BC they were led by Pacorus and Labienus.

    Marcus Antistius Labeo (d. 10 or 11 AD) was a prominent jurist of ancient Rome. He was the son of Pacuvius Antistius Labeo, a jurist who caused himself to be slain after the defeat of his party at Philippi.     Gaius Norbanus Flaccus was a Roman politician and general. In 42 BC Norbanus and Decidius Saxa, were sent by the triumvirs with eight legions into Macedonia against the murders of Julius Caesar. In the neighborhood of Philippi, Norbanus and Saxa met the combined advancing troops of Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus. As they were outnumbered, Norbanus and Sax occupied a position near Philipi which prevented the repub­licans advancing any further.
