    Luo Gan (罗干) (born July 1935) is a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and Political and Legislative Affairs Committee secretary of the People's Republic of China. Luo Gan was born in Shandong province and studied engineering at the Beijing Steel and Iron Institute. Luo joined the Communist Party of China in 1960.

  5. Xiaoyun Wang

    Xiaoyun Wang (born 1966) is a researcher and professor in the Department of Mathematics and System Science, Shandong University, Shandong, China. At the rump session of CRYPTO 2004, she and co-authors demonstrated collision attacks against MD5, SHA-0 and other related hash functions. (A collision occurs when two distinct messages result in the same hash function output). They received a standing ovation for their work.

  6. Wu Guanzheng

    Wu Guanzheng (b. August 1938) is the head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China, an anti-corruption body, and ranked 7 out of 9 on the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China. He is known to have good relationships with both President Hu Jintao and former President Jiang Zemin. Some sources consider him to be Hu's ally, while other consider him to be Jiang's.

  8. Li Shan

    Li Shan (born around 1686, died in 1756) was a Qing dynasty painter born in Jiangsu. He had an interest in painting at an early age and by 16 was a noteworthy painter. His paintings had an unrestricted quality and were influenced by Shitao. He was one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. Aside from painting he also served as a magistrate for a county in Shandong. Li Shan is also the name for two modern Chinese painters, one born in 1885 and the other in 1926.

  10. Mo Yan

    Mo Yan (莫言; Pinyin: Mò Yán) (born February 17, 1955) is a modern Chinese author, known in the West for two of his novels which were the basis of the film "Red Sorghum".   14. Xing Huina

    Xing Huina is a Chinese track and field athlete. Xing was born to family of farmers in Weifang, Shandong province. Standing 1.66 m tall and weighing 50 kg (110 lb), she began training at Weifang City Sport School, coached by Chi Yuzhai. She joined the Shandong Sport Technology Institute in 1999, coached by Yin Yanqin.   15. Pu Songling

    Pu Songling was from a poor landlord-merchant family from Zichuan (淄川, now Zibo, Shandong). Possibly he was of Mongol ancestry. At the age of nineteen, he received the xiucai degree in the civil service examination, but it was not until he was seventy-one that he received the gongsheng degree. He spent most of his life working as a private tutor, and collecting the stories that were later published in "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio".

  16. Faxian

    Faxian (also romanized as "Fa-Hien" or "Fa-hsien") (ca. 337 - ca. 422) was a Chinese Buddhist monk, who, between 399 and 412 travelled to India and Sri Lanka to bring Buddhist scriptures. His journey is described in his work "A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms, Being an Account by the Chinese Monk Fa-Hien of his Travels in India and Ceylon in Search of the Buddhist Books of Discipline".

    Zou Yan (305 BC - 240 BC) was the representative thinker of the School of Yin-Yang (or School of Naturalists) during the Hundred Schools of Thought era in Chinese philosophy. Joseph Needham, a British sinologist, describes Zou as (1978:142) "The real founder of all Chinese scientific thought." His teachings combined and systematized two current theories during the Warring States Period: Yin-Yang and the Five Elements/Phases (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water).

  31. Su Jun

    Su Jun (蘇峻) (d. 328) was a Jin Dynasty (265-420) general, whose rebellion against Emperor Cheng's regent Yu Liang was initially successful, allowing him to take over the imperial government, but he was eventually defeated by Tao Kan and Wen Jiao's forces and killed in battle. The disturbance he created greatly weakened the Jin regime, which for decades did not have any ability to fight back against rival Later Zhao.

  34. Wang Xiaobo

    Wang Xiaobo (May 13, 1952 - April 11, 1997) was a Chinese writer who became famous after his death. Wang was born in an intellectual family in Beijing in 1952. He was sent to a farm in Yunnan province as an "intellectual youth" at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1968. In 1971, he was sent to the countryside of Shandong province, and became a teacher. In 1972, he was allowed to return to Beijing, and he got a job as a working in a local factory.

  35. Zhang Zongchang

    Zhang Zongchang (1881 - 1932), nicknamed the "Dogmeat General," was a Chinese warlord in Shandong in the early 20th century. Born in poverty in Yi County (now Laizhou) in Shandong, he joined a bandit gang in 1911 and rose quickly after the bandits took service in the forces of the warlord of Jiangsu. After his defeat by rivaries, Zhang Zongchang sought refuge under Zhang Zuolin's power, and he made a good impression for himself at Zhang Zuolin's birthday party.

  37. Wang Lun

    Wang Lun (died November 1, 1774) was the leader of the White Lotus sect in Shandong province, China in the 1770s. He preached a millenarial philosophy, emphasizing the imminent coming of the Buddha Maitreya. A martial arts master and self-taught physician, Wang taught his followers yoga, meditation, and the ability to fast for very long periods by drinking purified water. His group became known as the "Pure Water Sect", and by 1774 numbered several thousand.

    Línjì Yìxuán (?–866) was the founder of the Linji school of Zen-Chán Buddhism during Tang Dynasty China. Linji was born into a family named Xing (邢) in Caozhou (modern Heze in Shandong), which he left at a young age to study Buddhism in many places. Linji was trained by the Chan master Huángbò Xīyùn (黃蘗希運; Huang-Po Hsi-Yun) but, according to the "Record of Linji", enlightened under the reclusive monk Dàyú (大愚).

  40. Kong Rong

    Kong Rong was a bureaucrat, poet, and minor warlord during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and Three Kingdoms era in ancient China. He was also the 20th generation descendant of Confucius. As he was once the governor of Beihai Commandery (北海, present day Weifang, Shandong), he was also known as Kong Beihai. He was defeated by Yuan Tan in 196 and escaped to the capital Xuchang, where he served effectively under Cao Cao, who held the puppet Emperor Xian under his control.
